In loving memory

Margaret Ellis

12 April 1938 – 3 February 2026

Bristol – Edinburgh

“She left every room a little warmer than she found it.”

Forever in our hearts

Margaret Ellis

Life story

Margaret was born in Bristol in the spring of 1938, the youngest of four. She learned to swim in the sea off Cornwall and never once admitted that the water was cold.

She trained as a nurse and spent thirty-four years at the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh, where she met Thomas, a quiet engineer who made her laugh. Together they raised two children, and more tomato plants than any family could eat.

In retirement she painted watercolours of the places she loved – the Cornish coast, her own garden, and the lake in Norway where the family spent every summer. She sang in a choir on Thursdays and always kept a tin of shortbread for whoever came to the door.

Memories

Every summer at the lake she woke us at six to see the mist on the water. We complained every single time. I would give anything to be woken like that again.

Margaret trained half the nurses on our ward. She taught us that a cup of tea and five minutes of listening can be the best medicine there is.
James Whitfield · 11 February 2026

Greetings

Thinking of Thomas and the whole family. She was the kindest neighbour anyone could wish for.
Ruth Okafor · 7 February 2026
We will keep singing your favourite songs on Thursdays.
Eleanor Grant · 8 February 2026
Thank you for the shortbread and the stories, Margaret. Rest well.
